If your family only gets to travel when school lets out, just realize that everyone else with kids is trying to book the exact same week you are. This high demand season causes prices to go up, and it is worth understanding before you start planning this year’s trip.
A real example
Earlier this year, a family of five booked a Christmas break trip to Jamaica. They deposited this vacation back in March. I priced that same trip again recently, for the same week, same resort, same everything, and it came back $4,000 higher than what they paid.
Nothing about the trip changed, just how close we are to the date everyone else wants too.
Why the price climbs
Christmas break is one of the few weeks a year when almost every family with school-age kids is traveling at the same time. I am looking forward to when we have more travel flexibility in the winter for this exact reason. Airlines and resorts also know this, and pricing follows demand. The earlier you book, the more of that increase you can avoid.
You do not have to pay it all today
Luckily, booking early does not mean paying in full months out. Depending on the supplier, I can offer deposits that start as low as $200 per person, which is often enough to lock in today’s price and you can pay for your vacation closer to travel time.
What if your plans change
Life happens, and travel plans sometimes have to shift. Cancel For Any Reason travel protection is worth asking about if you are booking this far ahead. It gives you the flexibility to change your mind and get cash or credit back should something come up and you need to cancel or adjust.
One more thing to know
Flights typically only open up for booking about ten months before departure. So, if Christmas 2027 is already on your radar, the right time to start that conversation is late February or early March of next year, not the fall before.
