I keep a running list of what’s opening and what’s getting a facelift in the Mexican Caribbean, mostly so I’m not caught flat-footed when a client asks. Three are worth flagging right now.
Riu Palace Peninsula This one just reopened in Cancun after a full renovation, and it’s genuinely a different hotel now. Natural tones and warm woods throughout, a bigger lobby with floor to ceiling windows looking out at the Caribbean, and 618 rooms total. The standout addition is the Elite Club, an adults-only upgrade with its own specialty restaurant, a private pool with a swim-up bar, and first pick of the 100 best rooms in the hotel, some with their own plunge pool. On the food side, they’re now at 9 restaurants and 7 bars, including two new spots, an American Country restaurant and an ice cream parlor called Candy. Six pools total, and adults staying here also get access to four weekly RIU Party nights next door at Riu Caribe. If a client loved Riu before but wanted more polish, this is the one to point them to.
Grand Hyatt Cancun Opening November 17, 2026, in Puerto Cancun, the newer waterfront district between downtown and the Hotel Zone. 500 rooms and suites, 28 of them with their own private plunge pool, plus a Presidential Suite. Fourteen dining venues, nine pools, a full-service spa, and over 30,000 square feet of event space if you’re thinking wedding or big family gathering. This one’s built for multigenerational trips and longer stays, not just a quick beach weekend, so it’s going on my list for family groups looking for something new.
El Dorado Royale The lobby just went through a renovation, and the early photos are worth a look if you’ve stayed here before or considered it. This is just a minor lobby update – but if this is a favorite of yours, it is good info to know.
