Are you thinking about booking your first cruise but feeling a little nervous? You are not alone. Every first timer has the same “what if” questions running through their head. Let’s talk through a few of the big ones.
What if I get seasick?
This is the number one worry I hear from first time cruisers. We have been on 11 cruises, and yes, some have been bumpy. You know it is getting crazy out there when the sick bags start showing up in the hallways.
But here’s the good news: modern ships are enormous and stabilized, so most people barely feel any motion at all. Really rough seas happen occasionally, but it is not the norm.
If you’re sensitive to motion, book a midship cabin (my go to recommendation), pack some Dramamine or ginger tablets, and get some fresh air on deck if you need it. You can also ask your doctor about a motion sickness patch for extra peace of mind.
What if I miss the ship?
It’s rare, and it’s totally avoidable. If you book excursions through the cruise line, the ship will wait for you if there’s a delay. If you prefer to book excursions on your own, plan to be back at least an hour before all aboard time.
We usually book our own excursions too, unless it’s a long drive from the port. In that case, we stick with the cruise line for the peace of mind.
Online check in feels confusing
It’s really just like checking in for a flight. You’ll need your passport, an emergency contact, and credit card info. Cruise lines have made this so much easier than it used to be, no more piles of paperwork in vanilla folders. Most clients finish online check in in about 15 minutes, right through the app.
If you need a hand with it, I’ll walk you through it step by step.
When should I arrive at the port?
Once you check in through the cruise line app, you’ll get a recommended arrival window. We always try to arrive as early as possible so we can start exploring the ship right away.
And always fly in the day before. Trust me on this one, flight and luggage delays happen, and you do not want to be stuck at the port without your clothes.
